Two-phase
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child visit with an orthodontist by the age of seven. Around this age, children have a mix of baby (primary) and permanent teeth, and examining them gives your child’s orthodontist a wealth of information.
It may be recommended to complete early treatment to correct or modify an existing issue that either would make later treatment more difficult or that would compromise results.
The primary goals of phase one treatment are the following:
- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving space for unerupted teeth
- Reducing the need for tooth removal
- Reducing treatment time with braces
During this phase, we monitor the growth and development of your child to determine if a second phase of orthodontic treatment is necessary. Your child will still have a select amount of baby teeth remaining and we will make sure the following permanent teeth erupt and develop in a regular fashion. Retainers are worn and adjusted to maintain the results from phase one treatment.
The primary goals of phase two treatment are the following:
- Alignment of all of the permanent teeth in the mouth
- Create an individualized place for each tooth
- Create a balanced smile that enhances the facial features
